Honoring African American Labor During Black History Month

HPSM strives for equitable access to high-quality health care services for every person we cover. Our vision of Healthy is or everyone reflects that ongoing commitment. We also recognize the reality that systemic injustices persist, and healthcare experiences are not equal for all, leading to inequities across both access to care and health outcomes.

Health equity means that every person has the opportunity to be as healthy as possible. Partnering with groups across San Mateo County enables us to take an effective health equity approach to healthcare. This helps us raise awareness and dismantle systems that hinder people from achieving optimal health.

In February, We Celebrated Black History Month!

Black History Month badgeThis year’s theme was “African Americans and Labor.” We honored the transformative contributions—both skilled and unskilled—that have shaped Black history, enriched culture and built the very infrastructure our country relies on. Black people who have done this work have historically been unsupported, leading to disparities in health, education, socioeconomic status and more.

HPSM continually works to better serve our Black-identifying members through improving their health care experiences, increasing utilization of preventive health services, building trust and partnership with the community, and reducing disparities among this population. We remain committed to enhancing accessibility and advancing equity for Black-identifying communities.

Our Black-identifying members currently have disparities in diabetes care and well-child visits. When talking with these members, encourage them to get preventative care and tell their primary care providers (PCPs) about any health concerns they have.
