Questions to Ask About Your Medicines

Taking a pill may seem simple enough. But to take medicines the right (and safe) way, there is a lot more you need to know. Here is a list of questions to ask your doctor so you can get the answers you need.

  • How should you take your medicines – exactly how much and when? Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain it to you.
  • Are you allergic to any ingredients? If you know that you are, make sure your doctor knows what you are allergic to. If you are at the pharmacy, tell the pharmacist what you are allergic to and ask if that is in your medicine. If you are not sure whether you are allergic to any ingredients, ask your doctor to check your health record.
  • Do you need to swallow your medicines? If you have trouble swallowing pills, tell the pharmacist. They may be able to give you chewable tablets or liquid medicines.
  • Do you have trouble opening the bottle? If so, ask the pharmacist to put your medicine in non-childproof bottles.
  • Does your medicine need to be refrigerated? Or can you store it at room temperature?
  • Do you need to take your medicines with food or on an empty stomach? Do you need to avoid drinking alcohol before taking your medicines? Will your medicines make you nervous or sleepy? Know before you take them.
  • Do any of your medicines interact with each other in a negative way? Make sure your doctor knows everything you take. That includes over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and dietary supplements.
  • What are the common side effects of your medicines? Know them so if you have them, you will know that you are having a normal experience. If you have bad side effects, tell your doctor. They may want to change your dosage or prescribe a different medicine.
  • Is it safe to drive after taking your medicines?
