July is Disability Pride Month! It all started 34 years ago, on July 26, 1990, when President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This historic civil rights law protects the rights of people with disabilities. In the US today, nearly one in four people have a disability. Disability Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate the history, achievements, and experience of the disability community. During July, we:
- Celebrate San Mateo County’s disability community.
- Continue promoting equitable, high-quality healthcare for our population of over 8,000 members with disabilities.
- Recognize that there is still work that needs to be done to make San Mateo County a more inclusive environment where everyone can live, work and play their way.
- Engaged in events supporting San Mateo County’s disability community, including the 5th Annual Inclusion Festival on Thursday, July 25th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Redwood City.
- Participated in an interactive webinar sponsored by Resources for Integrated Care about dental healthcare coordination for dually eligible members. Dr. Brown and Marisa Cardarelli spoke about HPSM’s work coordinating dental needs for people with disabilities. Watch the webinar.
