Celebrating Diversity!

Disability Pride Month, Hispanic Heritage Month and Native American History Month

“Healthy is for everyone” means making sure every person in San Mateo County has equitable access to high-quality services and supports. One way we pursue this vision is by identifying and reducing healthcare disparities that negatively impact our diverse community. During awareness months throughout the year, we highlight how we partner with our providers and other local healthcare organizations to meet our members’ needs.

During Disability Pride Month (July), HPSM attended the 5th Annual Inclusion Festival in Redwood City. We shared information about our programs and services that support people with disabilities. These include Community Based Adult Services centers, In-Home Support Services, Care Management through HPSM and CalAIM Community Supports. Learn more about these and other support programs .

Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15) is especially important to HPSM because more than half of our members identify as Hispanic or Latinx and 40% speak Spanish as their preferred language. As we strive towards health equity, we recognize how important it is that our staff and provider network reflect our membership’s diversity. We welcome employees and providers from Hispanic and Latinx backgrounds, especially those who speak Spanish. With one-quarter of our staff identifying as Hispanic or Latinx, we continue working towards proportional representation

November is Native American History MonthHPSM is committed to ongoing efforts that ensure Native American members have equitable access to the programs and services they need to be healthy. We do this by identifying any barriers to access and working with our partners to address them. For example, we support the Office of Diversity and Equity’s Native and Indigenous People’s Initiative (NIPI). This awareness, health education and outreach program seeks to revitalize San Mateo County’s Native and Indigenous culture by honoring traditional spiritual and healing practices.
