What is a Disability?

A disability is any condition of the body or mind that limits your ability to do certain physical or mental tasks or actions and can impact how you interact with the world. There are many types of disabilities, including those that affect a person’s:

  • Vision
  • Movement
  • Thinking
  • Mental health
  • Development

While “people with disabilities” is often used to refer to a single population, the experiences of individuals living with disabilities differ widely. Some disabilities may be hidden or not simply seen. Still, this does not mean that a person does not have a disability. Examples of disabilities include:

  • Genetic conditions like Down’s syndrome or muscular dystrophy
  • Developmental conditions like autism
  • Sensory conditions like hearing or vision loss
  • Mobility disabilities that restrict movement
