The Dangers of Vaping

E-cigarettes are not safe for youth, young adults, pregnant women or adults who do not currently use tobacco products. If you’ve never smoked or used other tobacco products or e-cigarettes, don’t start. E-cigarettes have only been sold in the U.S. since 2007. So researchers still don’t know how vaping impacts people’s long-term health. But there are some dangers we do know about:

  • Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which has known health effects
  • Nicotine is highly addictive
  • Nicotine is a health danger for pregnant women
  • Nicotine is toxic to developing fetuses
  • Nicotine can harm adolescent brain development, which continues into the early to mid-twenties

Do your kids vape?

  • You might not even know, because not all vaping devices look like cigarettes or pipes. Some look just like everyday objects such as pens, flash drives and even makeup.
  • Selling e-cigarettes to minors is illegal in 48 states. But 94% of kids who try to buy them online have been able to.
  • Kids who vape are three times more likely to start smoking tobacco cigarettes within a year than kids who don’t vape.
