Types of Covered Rides
HPSM’s Ride Benefit includes two types of ride services to meet different members’ needs:
1. Non-Medical Transportation (NMT)
NMT can be arranged if you do not need medical supervision or support from the driver. NMT uses a car, taxi, bus, or other public or private way of getting to your medical visit.
NMT can be arranged if you do not need medical supervision or support from the driver. NMT uses a car, taxi, bus, or other public or private way of getting to your medical visit.
There Are Two Types of NMT:
Use curb-to-curb service if you meet all three of these criteria:
- Can wait at the curb for your ride.
- Do not need assistance getting in and out of the vehicle and healthcare facility.
- Have a cell phone that can get text messages.
Use Door-To-Door Service If You Meet Either of These Two Criteria:
- Do not need assistance getting in and out of the vehicle and healthcare facility.
- Do not have a cell phone that can get text messages.
Tell American Logistics which type of ride you need when you call.
2. Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT)
Do Not call American Logistics for NEMT Rides. NEMT uses an ambulance, litter van, wheelchair van or air transport. NEMT does not use a car, bus or taxi.
You are entitled to use non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) when you physically or medically are not able to get to your medical, dental, mental health and substance use disorder appointment by car, bus, train or taxi, and HPSM pays for your medical or physical condition.
Before getting NEMT, you need to request the service through your doctor. Your doctor can prescribe the type of transportation you need to meet your medical condition. You can request NEMT from your doctor or reach out to HPSM Customer Support for information or assistance.
- Medi-Cal members: call Member Services
- CareAdvantage members: call the CareAdvantage Unit
- For urgent requests: call Integrated Care Management at 650-616-2060
- TTY for all services: 1-800-735-2929 or dial 7-1-1
Transportation must be requested at least five to seven business days before your scheduled appointment. Your doctor will need to submit the required documentation in order to process the request.
NEMT Can Be Used When:
- It has been approved in advance by HPSM with an authorization from your doctor.
- You require an ambulance, wheelchair van or litter van because your medical needs prevent you from being able to ride in a car, bus or taxi.
- You need help from the driver to and from your residence, vehicle or place of treatment due to a physical or mental disability.
HPSM’s Ride Benefit can only be used for approved healthcare visits when you have no other means of transportation. We check all rides to make sure members use HPSM’s Ride Benefit the right way. Members who do not follow program rules are put on an appointment verification ride list and must then get prior approval from HPSM for all ride requests before calling American Logistics.
